music magic

Grant set up a little party/show in the practice space at the Rainier Brewery this weekend to kick of his Straight Six Blues road tour and movie making. Check out his awesome blog here. I will be re-posting a bit while he travels so you can stay updated through me. It was super cozy with lots of friends and snacks and couple of kids racing around. Well, some kids crawling and Finn racing around. Colt Kraft (with grant and Tyler) played a really lovely set and then Aly and I did basically a practice round. I am still not so awesome at guitar and it kind of throws everything off when you're trying to work together (sorry Aly!!) but we had fun anyway. Finn even contributed some percussion on our first song.

Change is afoot, walking down the stairs and he's got his guitar!

Tyler, Finn and I are in for a spring full of changes and I wanted to share them with all of you and list them out just to get my head around them:
1. I gave my notice at work and Tyler and I are doing a flip flop! He goes to MSN everyday and I will be staying home with Finn starting March 1st!! Hot diggity dog.
2. Moving to Edmonds from March 1-June 1. My parents will be in Norway so we'll be looking after their lovely house, garden and kitty. Finn hasn't quite gotten what is happening, but I think he's going to like it.
3. I am running the Rock n Roll Marathon in Seattle on June 25th and I have just, in earnest begun my training. I have been jogging for a while now, but I'll be ramping up the mileage and organizing some training days. If you want to join me for a leg of some of my long runs, let me know! I'll be planning the routes and dates in advance and enlisting all of you to be my company! You can even ride, skate or inline alongside me if you prefer.

RED!
Tomorrow is the first day of February AND February is the month when
valentine's day happens! Yahoo! I redid our card showcase to reflect
the coming holiday with a smattering of pink, red, notes with
sentimental value AND homemade valentines from my mom. This is not the
whole collection, but as I settle into adulthood and take time to
organize the mementos from my past I find more darling valentines a la
mom! So sweet! What will this year's be? Keep your browser here around
the 14th and find out. xoxoxo

Strong guy!!!
Oh man does Finn like to wiggle. And he's getting more coordinated every day. His Auntie Alice has been in town and as we were riding Link downtown, Finn was showing off with some gymnastic style feats if strength.

Christmas surprise of the decade!!
Woah! This a homemade denyse schmidt "hope valley" quilt from Aly that
I wasn't expecting no way no how!!! We bought the kit together and I
was sufficiently jealous and had absolutely NO fantasies that I would
someday own it. But, lo and behold!!! There it is on my couch. I love
it. Thanks Aly. If I have to flee and I can only take a few things,
that quilt will be in the stash. In fact, I think the stash would be
all quilts. This one makes a fine addition to my expanding collection
and is the only one not made by my mom, grandma or great grandma.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Starting at the top: I'm not too old for block! It's like having a little wooden quilt prototype set; Reversible, two-color wool placemats and susie-style napkins for Annie and Kevin; Finn is starting to show some very advanced engineering tendencies, let's get him tested right away!!; Post-swim recovery phase at the YMCA.

Snowflakes!

We've already had so many this year that I feel greedy asking for more. But, I am still eager for our next flurry. This has been tiding me over until now. Click on the link and see real pictures of snowflakes in all their varied glory. And another thing. What came first? Paper snowflakes or pictures of actual snowflakes? Do kids just know the shape of snow without ever having to see flakes under a microscope camera. I want to know this. And how should kids know that some flakes are really simple boxy things with only a few holes? I always thought the paper flakes that turned out really simple were kind of, well, boring. But no! Nature makes them just like that. Simple, humble, fancy-free snowflake. Happy winter solstice to all of you.

All summer longing
I am busily sewing Christmas gifts while Tyler and Finn and are bouncing in the snow up in Colorado with Finn's grandparents and with all this miserable rain, I keep longing for summer. But I did sleep until 10am this morning (that hasn't happened for at least 18 months--I don't know if I should be happy or sad) and I can't help but think that the gray clouds contributed to my deliciously long night, another blanket keeping me calm and warm and asleep.
